The Canadian Harambee Education Society
The Canadian Harambee Education Society (CHES) exists to provide high school fees for promising young girls in Kenya and Tanzania, two countries which also happen to produce some of the world's most treasured coffee.
Beyond grade 8, a year of high school costs more than the total annual income of many of the poor rural families in these African countries. CHES sponsors girls specifically, since girls typically lose in the competition for family resources.
More information about CHES is available at their website: www.canadianharambee.ca.
JJ Bean began working with CHES in May 2010. With the participation of our customers we were able to raise $2,000 - enough to cover a year of high school for four Kenyan and Tanzanian girls - through the sale of one of our seasonal Special Reserve coffees.
